The magic of raw cocoa: 11 reasons why this superfood is so healthy

Raw cocoa, also known as the “Food of the Gods” or “Drink of the Gods”, has always fascinated mankind. In the original civilizations, it was not only valued as a food, but also revered as a sacred plant. Today, raw cacao is making an impressive comeback as a superfood as numerous studies show the extraordinary health benefits of this unique food. From promoting healthy heart function to improving mood, there are many reasons why raw cacao is considered one of nature’s most nutritious and delicious ingredients.

I discovered the benefits and drinking the original raw cacao on my travels at the Lago de Atitlan in Guatemala. I also made my Cacao Facilitator Training there. The training was amazing run by the great team of Cacao Source. But the Location was even better at this magical place called Mystical Yoga Farm with direct lake access. 9 Month after that training I hold space for my first cacao ceremony including a nice Singing Circle. 14 month later I drink cacao daily in the morning. In retrospect, I wonder why it took my so long. It has so many benefits, it is incredible and you donĀ“t need to breakfast:

  1. High antioxidant content
A notable feature of raw cocoa is its exceptionally high antioxidant content. Flavonoids, polyphenols and catechins are just a few of the antioxidant compounds found in raw cacao. These substances protect our cells from the harmful effects of free radicals, which can lead to oxidative stress. By consuming raw cacao we can help reduce the development of cell damage and minimize the risk of chronic diseases, including cardiovascular disease and certain types of cancer.

  2. Promoting heart health
The positive effect of raw cocoa on the cardiovascular system is impressive. The flavonoids found in cocoa promote the production of nitric oxide, a substance that dilates blood vessels and improves blood flow. This helps lower blood pressure and reduce the risk of heart attacks and strokes. In addition, the antioxidant properties of raw cocoa can help prevent the oxidation of LDL cholesterol (the so-called “bad” cholesterol), which in turn reduces the risk of atherosclerosis.

  3. Mood improvement and feelings of happiness
Raw cacao can do more than please our taste buds; it can also lift our spirits. Researchers have found that certain chemical compounds in cocoa, such as phenylethylamine and anandamide, may act as “happy hormones.” These neurotransmitters can increase well-being and induce a feeling of euphoria. It’s no wonder that chocolate is often associated with positive emotions!

  4. Supporting brain function and memory
In addition to improving mood, raw cocoa can also have a positive effect on brain function and memory. Studies have shown that the flavonoids found in raw cocoa may help increase cognitive performance, particularly in older adults. Regular consumption of raw cocoa could thus play a role in delaying mental decline in old age and reducing the risk of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s.
  1. Energy and endurance
Are you looking for a natural energy boost? Raw cacao contains a number of stimulant compounds like natural caffeine and theobromine that can increase energy and improve endurance. In contrast to artificially sweetened energy drinks, raw cocoa offers this energy without the dreaded “sugar crash” afterwards.

  2. Rich in essential minerals
Raw cocoa is a real treasure of essential minerals. Magnesium, iron, potassium, zinc and copper are just a few of the important nutrients found in cocoa. Magnesium is particularly important for a variety of bodily functions, including muscle relaxation, nerve function and immune system support. Iron is crucial for blood formation and oxygen transport in the body. Consuming raw cocoa can therefore help maintain a healthy mineral balance.
  3. Strengthening of the immune system
A strong immune system is crucial for our health. The antioxidant effects of raw cacao can help boost the immune system and improve our defenses against infection and disease. By supplying our body with the nutrients from raw cocoa, we support it in overcoming external challenges.

  1. Supporting healthy skin

Raw cocoa is a treat not only for the palate, but also for the skin. The rich antioxidants can help protect the skin from free radical damage and promote skin elasticity. In addition, raw cacao also contains a variety of fatty acids that can help moisturize the skin and keep it supple.

  1. Regulation of blood sugar levels

Raw cacao may be beneficial for people with diabetes or insulin resistance. Through its ability to stabilize insulin and blood sugar levels, raw cacao helps prevent blood sugar spikes and reduces the risk of complications associated with high blood sugar levels. The fiber contained in raw cocoa also supports a slower absorption of sugar into the blood.

  1. Promote healthy digestion

Fiber is essential for healthy digestion. Luckily, raw cacao is high in fiber, which can help improve digestion and prevent constipation. Properly functioning digestion is important for the absorption of nutrients and the elimination of waste products from the body.

  1. Gluten-free and low-allergen
For people with gluten intolerance or food allergies, raw cocoa is a safe option. Naturally gluten-free and free from common allergens such as milk, nuts or soy, raw cocoa and products made with it can be enjoyed by almost everyone without intolerance or allergic reactions occurring.

Despite the impressive health benefits of raw cacao, it’s important to emphasize that consumption in moderation is advisable. While most people can enjoy raw cocoa and dark chocolate, those with specific health conditions or sensitive reactions to caffeine and stimulants may want to limit their consumption.

If you want to take advantage of the health benefits of raw cocoa, it is best to use high-quality, untreated raw cocoa products. For example, my friend Mischa has very good raw cocoa here: https://kakaomischa.de/collections/all

You can also find chocolates with a high cocoa content (80% or more) on the supermarket shelf. Much better and healthier than regular chocolate.

Overall, raw cacao is undoubtedly a remarkable superfood that not only delights our taste buds but also supports our health in many ways. So let yourself be enchanted by the magic of raw cocoa and enjoy its numerous health benefits!

I enjoy a big cup of raw cacao with oat milk every morning after getting up and drink it with gratefulness and devotion.
